A new variant of Wolverine is not like the well-known Marvel hero, mercilessly hunting his own friends

Wolverine is probably the most famous mutant in the X-Men. Several films, series, games and even comics have made him the protagonist of stories. In a new comic from Marvel, the hero becomes a tragic figure who is forced to fight against his colleagues.

What kind of comic is this? Marvel is currently starting a reboot of the controversial Ultimate universe. This is essentially an alternate world in which the heroes and villains we know are slightly different than in the classic 616 universe. One of the heroes getting a new comic series is Wolverine.

In Ultimate Wolverine #1 by writer Chris Condon and artist Allessandro Cappuccio, the well-known mutant has a new, altered origin story that merges with another well-known character. This doesn’t end well for Wolverine, who is forced to fight against his old comrades.

Spoiler warning: In this article you will read spoilers for the current first issue of Ultimate Wolverine.

The mutant can also be seen in the animated series X-Men ’97:

Wolverine becomes the Winter Soldier

Wolverine becomes a character that is also known from the MCU. In a flashback we learn that Wolverine was the only one to survive a plane crash. The plane crashed in the Eurasian Republic from Maker. The Maker is a villainous variant of Mister Fantastic who rules like a dictator.

At the crash site, Wolverine is then captured by the evil variants of the mutants Magik and Colossus, whom he actually fights as a resistance fighter. As in his original story, he is enhanced by scientists by strengthening his bones with adamantium.

His memories are also erased and he becomes a mindless soldier who is not named Wolverine, but rather Winter Soldier. In the 616 universe, Bucky Barnes is captured and turned into a mindless Hydra soldier through mind control. You can see this in the 2014 film Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

In the first issue of the series, Wolverine is also sent on a mission to fight the Resistance. He brutally kills Mystique. In the fight against Nightcrawler, his former friend tries to appeal to his memories, but Wolverine just as quickly kills Nightcrawler, who sheds a tear in death.

This isn’t the first time Wolverine has tragically killed his own comrades. But the mix of Winter Soldier and Wolverine is something new. Wolverine, like many other superheroes, has been given many different variants over the course of his comics. Many of them are pretty bizarre: The 7 weirdest variants of Wolverine that we will probably never see in the MCU
