GTA V Liberty City Mode Closed by Rockstar

GTA V Liberty City Mode Closed by Rockstar

Rockstar Games has closed the popular mode called GTA V Liberty City Preservation Project. The community reacted and the mod team terminated the project.

GTA V Liberty City Preservation Projectwas a mod that brought GTA IV’s iconic Liberty City map to GTA V. The mode, which was released last January after six years of development, was offered to players free of charge. The mod worked on the GTA V and FiveM platforms, allowing players to explore Liberty City with renewed graphics. However, as a result of the intervention of Rockstar Games, the development and distribution of the project was stopped.

Why Did Rockstar Decide to Close the GTA V Liberty City Mode?

World Travel, the developer team of the mod, announced in a statement via Discord that they decided to terminate the project after communication with Rockstar Games. While the team thanked the intense interest in the project, they stated that they will continue their passion for the Grand Theft Auto series with different mod projects.

This situation brought Rockstar and its parent company Take-Two Interactive’s attitude towards community-developed projects back to the agenda. Many similar modes have been stopped for legal reasons before. The closure of the Liberty City Preservation Project drew huge backlash from fans on social media.

This mod, seen by players as “GTA IV Remastered”, strengthened the community’s demand for an official remaster from Rockstar. Despite the closure of the Liberty City Preservation Project, GTA V’s popularity has not diminished. While the game became the fifth best-selling game in Europe in 2024, it was also the most watched game on live streaming platforms last year.

Although the World Travel team announced that they will continue their modding work, Liberty City’s return to GTA V seems to be over for now. Let’s see how Rockstar will respond to these reactions from the community.
