The head of Hungary’s anti-corruption authority, Ferenc Biro, has been questioned in a corruption case in his home country. This is according to prosecutors who say that “the house search and coordinated efforts in several places – including the headquarters of the anti-corruption authority” have been carried out.
The authority was established in 2022, and last autumn the EU’s anti-corruption unit announced that close cooperation with the Hungarian authority would begin.
According to the prosecutor’s office, Biro is suspected of, among other things, embezzlement. Among other things, he is said to have leased a luxury car for his wife with the authority’s money.
Biro denies all accusations.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has been accused of enriching political allies through public tenders, something the EU closely monitors.
