Regional energy strategy
The province of Utrecht and the three regions face the challenge of jointly generating 2.4 terawatt hours (TWh) of sustainable energy by 2030. This is necessary to achieve the climate goals and make the transition to cleaner energy.
2.4 TWh is enough power to supply around 800,000 households with electricity every year. This requires more wind turbines and solar fields than the municipalities can provide so far.
The province has previously announced that there are 27 areas where multiple wind turbines would fit. Now that there have not been enough initiatives from the municipalities, the province itself is designating areas where it will generate wind energy.
