– On the one hand, buying cars is one of the largest and most expensive purchases we make, and on the other hand there are many people who depend on having a working car to make their lives work. Both work-wise and privately, she says and continues:

– In addition, it is the purchase of a technically complicated product that most of us do not know very much about, and it is difficult to assess whether it is a good or bad purchase if you do not let a professional take a closer look at the condition of the car.

Buying used cars leaves many unsatisfied: “Clean the junk”

With 21.5 percent of consumers complaining, vehicles ended up at the top of the list. Half of these complaints concerned cars bought used.

– If you buy a used car, it also means that it can look very nice on the outside, but be pure rubbish under the hood. And with all the electronics, it is not enough nowadays to even look under the engine hood to detect faults, says Wiezell.

Wiezell emphasizes the importance of gathering information before making a large purchase.

– In addition, unfortunately, there are a lot of unscrupulous dealers who buy and refurbish scrap cars and resell them at a much higher price than they are worth. And when it comes to what is originally wrong with a used car, you have to compare it to what is reasonable to expect from a car that is a certain age, has done a certain number of miles, costs this much and has this information, if there is even a goods declaration on the car.

That’s what you should think about when you buy a car

Maria Wiezell at Sweden’s consumers shares several tricks that are worth keeping in mind when buying a car, used or not.

  • If you want to buy a car, you should preferably choose a seller who is part of the trade association MRF, check the dealer, are they registered with ARN, are they on Råd och Rön’s black list, what do other consumers write about their purchases from the dealer.
  • Check the car’s history at the Swedish Transport Agency and Carfax. If there have been many owners, you should perhaps consider whether to buy it.
  • It can also be good to buy with a credit card or through a credit provider, because then according to the Consumer Credit Act, the credit provider is also responsible if the company, for example, goes bankrupt or does not meet its obligations, if the car is not as promised.
  • Feel free to bring a friend who knows cars who can help check the car and be with you when you test drive it. If you buy a car online, you must also remember that you have a 14-day right of withdrawal according to law. Something you don’t have if you buy the car in a car dealership.
