In some parts of Sweden, the upper secondary school election has already been open for a while, in other places it opened on Wednesday.
Regardless, there seems to be feverish thinking going on at home with many teenage families right now, notes Johan Olssonwho is a skills supply expert at Swedish Enterprise.
— It is a big and important choice. But we also remind you that it is not life-changing, he says.

According to the organization’s latest survey of high school programs, Swedish ninth graders largely choose high school education according to interest. But the opportunities to get a job have become an increasingly important component as well.
There, the vehicle and transport program is top notch.
For example, the construction and civil engineering program and the plumbing and real estate program are also good in terms of how quickly it is possible to get a job after high school.
— It is the automotive industry, the civil engineering sector and industry that are at the top. It’s nothing that really surprises us, but that’s how companies’ supply needs and recruitment look like, says Johan Olsson.

“Thoughtful choice”
According to the survey, the university preparatory programs are often perceived as better when it comes to, for example, the opportunities for good working hours or for a well-paid job.
At the same time, vocational programs now also provide a basic university qualification, points out Johan Olsson.
“We want the students to make a more well-thought-out choice of upper secondary school, but of course that is also connected to the great needs we see in the Swedish labor market,” he says.
