As the unemployment rate in France continues to rise, many young Generation Z people are missing out on job offers due to a bad habit.
Are you or a young person you know having difficulty finding a job? This is unfortunately not an isolated case. While the unemployment rate has started to rise again since 2023, it is increasing even more among the new generation. Thus, nearly 19% of 15-24 year olds were unemployed at the end of 2024.
If the job market has further hardened with the fallout from the Covid-19 epidemic, a study also points to the responsibility of the new generation. This study, carried out by the site
If the new generation is addicted to screens and new technologies, they seem quite allergic to a practice that is nevertheless vital for recruitment and employment: telephone calls. The study, carried out by the site and corroborated by a report carried out by the British company Uswitch, explains that more and more young people no longer answer phone calls at all if they do not recognize the number displayed on their smartphone. This allows them, of course, to avoid any cold calling, but also to miss out on potential returns in the context of recruitment.
The study carried out on several test subjects also reports that telephone calls are generally associated with spam or attempted scams and fraud for a majority of young people. Worse still: for Generation Z, a phone call generally means bad news and not answering it allows them to be avoided or postponed until later. The younger generation is turning more to social media and written messages for their communications.
In order to confirm the observations of this study, the Xataka Movil site collected the testimony of a recruitment expert, responsible for contacting profiles for positions for which they applied. His return is quite equivocal: “out of the 14 profiles who sent their application, only 4 responded to my phone calls. I contacted the others by message on WhatsApp and they all responded.” Unfortunately for the latter, the recruiter did not follow up because he believes that putting his telephone number on a recruitment offer is equivalent to preparing to receive a phone call to schedule a potential job interview.
