Judi Dench played her first role in The Cherry Orchard
You guessed it right: It’s about Dame Judi Dench, of course. She appeared in front of the camera twice for a film adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard. In 1962 she made her film debut as Anja – in 1981 she again embodied the character of Madame Ranjewskaya.
The film is about the impoverished noble Ranyevskaya family in 1900, who are forced to rent out their country estate. However, the prerequisite for this would be to cut down the beautiful cherry orchard. The family, including the estate’s daughter Anja, is desperately looking for another solution.
Her eight Oscar nominations The Englishwoman received the Best Actress category for Her Majesty Mrs. Brown, Iris, Lady Henderson Presents, Diary of a Scandal and Philomena and the Best Supporting Actress category for Belfast, Chocolat and Shakespeare in Love.
She won an Oscar in 1999 for her performance as Elizabeth I in Shakespeare in Love, which also won Best Film that year. It is also likely to appeal to a large audience M in the James Bond series to be known – a role she played for 20 years, from GoldenEye to Specter.
Judi Dench is still working as an actress today: most recently she appeared in Kenneth Brannagh’s Belfast and Sean Anders’ Spirited.
