Foreign ship with explosive cargo stopped
The ship ESL Europa docked in Uddevalla harbor on January 6. Now it has been stopped from going any further.
The Cypriot-flagged ship was actually supposed to leave the port today, but was stopped by the Swedish Transport Agency after a long series of deficiencies.
In total, there are 19 different problems.
– There are all sorts of flaws. We can find shortcomings in both technical and operational areas. Some of the shortcomings are linked to fire protection, says Mikael Andersson, the Swedish Transport Agency’s press manager.
The ship is loaded with ammonium nitrate, a substance used, among other things, as an explosive. However, Mikael Andersson is not worried about the cargo being a security risk in the port.
– This is by no means an unusual load. They have full control of this in the port, he says.
The ship must now remedy the deficiencies before they are allowed to leave Uddevalla.
