An assessment of Woodstock Hospital by Accreditation Canada – a non-profit organization – nets the health-care facility an “exemplary standing” designation, which hospital officials said underscored the “safe, high-quality and people-centered care” they offer.

“I’m always impressed with the patient care that our staff provides here,” said Woodstock Hospital chief executive and president Perry Lang. “Having it validated by Accreditation Canada is very rewarding.”

An exemplary standing is achieved when health or social services organizations meet “rigorous standards of excellence” and demonstrate a “high-level commitment to safety and care for the communities they serve,” according to Accreditation Canada’s website.

Five surveyors from Accreditation Canada did the assessment of Woodstock Hospital between Dec. 2 and Dec. 4. That included a patient surveyor, engagement with staff and touring the facility’s departments to assess its programs, policies and processes, a hospital statement noted.

“Basically, (the designation) means that we’ve been independently validated,” Lang said, adding there were several areas singled out.

“(Examiners) noted that we have a deep sense of solidarity and support for one another. They also recognize us for our use of metrics, and they praise how we use data quality to drive quality improvement initiatives.”

Surveyors were also impressed by the hospital’s use of clinical coaches to work with novice nurses by helping them to develop their skills, Lang said. Woodstock Hospital was also credited for enhancing patient safety and staff confidence and retention within the organization, he added.

Patrice Hilderley is chair of Woodstock Hospital’s board. Hilderley said in a statement that the recognition was appreciated. “There is something special about hearing it from the accreditation team, as they validate our strong feelings of pride for our community hospital.”
