In many places, rents are rising rapidly, and the number of homes available to Spaniards is decreasing as many are rented out to tourists year-round.
Now Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is launching a reform package to improve the housing market, reports El País.
Among other things, the government wants to double the tax on homes bought by foreigners from countries outside the EU, and that apartments rented out through, for example, Airbnb should be classified as business activities and thus receive higher taxes and VAT.
The government is also proposing a series of measures to give publicly owned housing more space on the market.
