Anyone who loves futuristic stories is usually served one of two dishes: hard, intellectual science fiction full of philosophical questions and reflections on humanity – or colorful space opera with crazy aliens and crazy worlds. In the second category in particular, however, things have looked a bit poor in recent years.
A few years ago a small, fine film delivered exactly that turned the madness control to the maximum. Valerian – The City of a Thousand Planets already reveals with its title how many different worlds, creatures and little stories await us there. Now that the film is available to stream on Netflix, we definitely want to recommend this sci-fi experiment.
Valerian on Netflix sends an unlikely duo of agents on an unparalleled adventure ride
We are in the far, far future. In the 28th century, to be precise. Intergalactic peace may not be universal, but it is finally a reality for many nations and planets. The center of this peace is Alpha, one gigantic space stationwhere different peoples have come together and lived together in harmony for centuries. But where many cultures and experiences come together, trouble is inevitable.
When violent crimes and undercover operations occur, the Human Federation counts two sovereign agents: Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne). The two are competent, self-confident, smart – and can’t stand each other.
However, when there is one on Alpha’s horizon galaxy-spanning conspiracy is brewing, Commander Arun Filitt (Clive Owen) sends the two brawlers on a joint mission. The fate of peace lies in their hands.
Valerian is an unforgettable journey through countless worlds and full of surprises
Hardly any film in recent years has dared to open up such an over-the-top, crazy and colorful world as Valerian. There is something here in every scene, every image, every shot to discover something new. Instead of a handful of unique alien nations and planets, there are dozens of them to explore.
As soon as Valerian and Laureline turn the next corner of the city of thousands, we as an audience are overwhelmed by colors, shapes and ideas – in a good way. Valerian will never boring for a second. What’s more, there is an almost ridiculous level of attention to detail in all of the designs.
Be it unique ecosystems, never-before-seen alien anatomies, cuddly cuddly creatures, crazy rituals and touching customs or roaring monsters – Valerian has a little bit of everything. As a endless hidden object bookwhich gets even crazier with every page, the film is a roller coaster ride that constantly surprises. Unfortunately, this is a rarity today and should definitely be enjoyed as an experience.
So if you’re looking for fun to explore and a truly incomparable world, you can check out Valerian – The City of a Thousand Planets stream now on Netflix.
