Nishesh Basavareddy gave good resistance to Novak Djokovic in the opening round of the Australian Open.
Ten-time winner of the Australian Open tennis tournament Novak Djokovic advanced from the opening round of this year’s race. Victory over the 19-year-old American of Nishesh Basavareddy however, it did not come easily.
The final numbers of the match were 4–6. 6–3, 6–4, 6–2. Basavareddy, ranked 107th in the world, started well and won the opening set. He took the ball from the rise and hit some impressive forehands against Djokovic.
– I think he was the better player for the first one and a half sets. To be honest, I only saw him play 3-4 days ago, so I didn’t know much about him. He positively surprised me with his shots and his will to fight, Djokovic said.
The young man’s legs began to cramp at the end of the second set, when the match began to turn for Djokovic.
Basaraveddy won two Challenger tournaments and played in four other finals last year. He now played in the main series of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time.
