Launch of Bezos’ new rocket cancelled

The company writes that it is holding off on today’s launch attempt to troubleshoot a problem and is reviewing the possibilities for our next launch attempt.”

Jeff Bezos’ venture is supposed to shake up the commercial space race.

The New Glenn rocket is named after the astronaut John Glenn, it is 98 meters high and will be launched from Cape Canaveral on the night of Monday local time.

“SpaceX for the last few years has been pretty much the only one, so to have a competitor … this is great,” G Scott Hubbard, a retired senior NASA official, told AFP before the launch.

The idea is that right after launch, when it comes off, Blue origin will try to land on a ship about 100 miles south of the launch site in the Atlantic. It will be Blue Origin’s first attempt at landing in the ocean.

Dramatic reduction of birds in the Nordic region

Between 20 and 55 percent fewer birds were registered at bird stations in Sweden, Norway and Denmark last year.

It is a continuation of a downward trend over the past ten years, writes the Danish Ornithological Association in one press release.

The reduction applies to both small birds such as ptarmigan and tits as well as several different birds of prey.

According to Simon Christiansen at Skagen’s bird station, last year’s low number of births may be an explanation, but also cold weather during the spring which may have killed more birds than usual.

    More are called to muster

Around 30,000 young people born in 2007 will be called up for conscription this year, reports Sweden’s radio Ekot.

That is slightly more than last year, when 27,900 were called.

Of these, 8,500 will be taken out for basic education, a number that the Swedish National Service expects to be able to fill without a problem, despite the fact that the majority of young people usually answer that they cannot do military service for various reasons.

    – At these volumes, we assess that we will be able to do it. Then it can happen that if we go beyond 10,000, it can be a bit more difficult, says Director General Christina Malm of the Public Service Agency to Ekot.

This year is the second year since conscription was reactivated that young people are called up even if they have stated that they do not want to do conscription.
