Former skating star Nils van der Poel won both World Cup and Olympic gold before ending his career.
Now he has made a decisive decision for his new life in the shadows.
Nils van der Poel has changed his surname.
Three years ago, he made all Swedes proud by winning double Olympic gold at 5,000 and 10,000 meters in Beijing. Nils van der Poel28, also holds the world records at both distances. After his great success, he chose something unexpected to retire.
Nils van der Poel’s new life
During his “new life” outside the limelight, Nils has partly won the “Master of Masters” and partly worked as a lecturer, as an ambassador for Skistar and was part of their mountain national team. He has also run two companies and raked in millions from them, but now one of them is lying fallow for the next five years.

Expressen writes that his other company, van der Poels Sports & Relations AB, was originally intended to help young Swedish athletes in their careers. But now it will take a new direction. In addition, the company name is expected to change. The company must operate “within law, economics, science and technology as well as management and trading of securities for a limited and closed circle of owners”. Van der Poel has bought out the previous CEO and a board member to instead take control of the company himself.

It is not only the company that is changing its name. He wants to continue to stay out of the limelight by making himself more anonymous. Therefore, he has changed his surname, something that came into effect on November 22 last year. Then the change in the population records at the Tax Agency was carried out.

His name is Nils van der Poel nowadays Nils Svensson. The surname is his mother’s maiden name. In recent years, he has not wanted to appear for any interviews. Not this time either, when Expressen was looking for him.
