On Sunday, an extensive search effort was underway at lake Mäsen in Varberg municipality after the rescue service received an alert about a suspected drowning.
It was just after lunch that witnesses called in that they had seen a car on the ice. The rescue service has searched the area from land, water and air – but has not been able to see any signs of drowning.
– The ice is very thin, so you don’t see it as a probability that a car will have gone out on the lake, says Thomas Andersson, who is the officer on duty at the rescue service.
The ice must have been so thin that it cracked and blew away when the sea rescue helicopter got close enough.
Were probably reflections in the ice
Shortly after 2 p.m., the operation ended.
The rescue service’s theory is that shifts in the ice together with sunlight may have caused the callers to think they saw cars on the ice.
– We have searched for everything that can be searched, says Thomas Andersson.
A total of twelve units participated in the search, including a maritime rescue helicopter from Gothenburg.
