Skating: Nils van der Poel has changed his name – now called Svensson

Skater Nils van der Poel won double Olympic gold in Beijing 2022 at 5,000 and 10,000 meters. He also holds world records at both distances.

Shortly after the successes, he still chose to stop skating altogether. Since then, he has acted as a lecturer and run a company with a focus on lifting young Swedish athletes.

Now van der Poel chooses to take another step away from celebrity and into anonymity. Since November, his name is now Nils Svensson, reports The Express. According to the newspaper, the change took place on 22 November at the Tax Agency.

Svensson is his mother’s maiden name.

Svensson (van der Poel) did not want to comment on the name change for the newspaper.

In the clip above, coach Johan Röjler answers the question about a possible comeback to the skating rink for Nils Svensson (formerly van der Poel).
