Underwater is gripping deep-sea horror that doesn’t just leave the characters breathless. In just 95 minutes we experience pure horrorwhere in the end only one question matters: Who will make it back to the surface?
The main role is played by Kristen Stewart (Twilight, Love Lies Bleeding), who will soon be appearing in another sci-fi film.
This is what Underwater is all about – It comes to life on Disney+
A research team, including mechanical engineer Norah Price (Stewart), has gathered at a station in the depths of the Mariana Trench. However, due to a violent earthquake, they are forced to leave their station. As they attempt to reach the surface, they discover they are not alone – deadly creatures lurk in the darkness of the deep sea.
A fight for survival in a hostile environment begins as the team realizes that their research has unleashed something they are no match for.
It awakens – and we are helpless at its mercy
The script, written by Brian Duffield (Jane Got a Gun, Insurgent), takes up a number of horror tropes: scientists in a hostile environment, the threatening approach of an alien power – and the realization that the latter has been awakened by one’s own actions have.
Nevertheless, it manages to repackage the familiar elements in an exciting way. In Underwater, none of the 95 minutes is even a minute too long.
Through his direction, William Eubank adds an oppressive look to Duffield’s story, in which you can feel the increasing threat more clearly from scene to scene. Not to mention the hungry sea creatures that have it all.
Thanks to the cast, the horror feels real
We have a good cast to thank for the adrenaline rush. Kristen Stewart, Vincent Cassel, Jessica Henwick and Co. Their roles develop a dynamic that takes you into the depths of the Mariana Trench.
Although we learn little about the characters, they are convincing as a team that doesn’t let each other down. It is this sincere solidarity that ensures that you can hardly take your eyes off the arduous odyssey from the bottom of the sea to the surface – right up to the explosive finale.
Underwater premiered on January 10, 2020 and is included with your Disney+ subscription.
