Former pop star Antti Tuisku skis for the first time at SM level on Saturday in the men’s 10 km traditional race.

The preparation for the competition has not gone exactly as hoped, because Tuisku says that he had a cold since the beginning of the week, which, however, did not develop into a worse disease.

– At no point should you stay on the bottom of the bed. Of course, the athlete would like to not have to think about such things, but on the other hand, a year of work has been done on this, and the plan has been kept well. Development has taken place, Tuisku, who was watching the women’s pair sprint qualifying on Friday, told Urheilu.

– You have to believe that the condition is there and tomorrow you can measure what needs to be measured.

Tuisku sets off first in the men’s race, so he may have to plow the track for the others – after all, snow has been promised for Imatra during the race.

– It’s not the most ideal starting point, but they are perhaps secondary issues in my case. I’m going to enjoy the fact that I get to go on this journey. This has been an extremely great experience so far.

Tuisku does not have specific performance goals for the race. He tries to make a balanced performance and keep his technique together.

– If I think about my own fitness and development, where I am today, there should be skiers worth considering, whose scalps I could take.

Many supporters of Tuisku are coming along the route. Although he is used to large audiences in his career as an artist, now the situation is different.

– Latulla is in its own bubble. Tomorrow you will see how much I can even register the events along the track. Yes, it certainly gives extra motivation and momentum when people are cheering and shouting. It’s wonderful that so many people are coming here.

Tuisku admits that he is excited for the upcoming competition. An appropriate amount of tension is good, because it tells you that the matter is important. If the tension grows too much, Tuisku tries to remind himself that he has only invested seriously in the sport for a year.

– I can’t get distracted thinking that I would compare myself to these others who have been doing this their whole lives. If I remember that, it lightens my shoulders.

At least the tension hasn’t disturbed Tuisku’s night’s sleep. Last night he dragged the log for nine hours.

Tuisku, who ended his career as an artist in the summer of 2023, said in February of last year that he would become a full-time skier and aim for the 2025 World Championships. He has also founded his own ski club, AT Ski Team.

Tuisku will still be skiing at the beginning of April in Taivalkoski in the 10 kilometer freestyle skiing championship. Then he plans to stop investing in competitive skiing.
