The EU has paid out the first part of a loan based on returns from frozen Russian assets in EU countries. The sum paid corresponds to almost SEK 35 billion.

“Today we are delivering three billion euros to Ukraine, the first disbursement of the EU part of the G7 loan,” writes European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on X.

The proposal for returns from Russian assets in EU countries, the US, Canada and Japan was adopted at the G7 group summit last summer. The EU will contribute a total of around SEK 200 billion of the G7 loan, while the US has promised to contribute the equivalent of just over SEK 220 billion.

The G7 settlement has replaced an earlier EU initiative where proceeds from Russian assets were sent to Ukraine.
