Tesla overtaken by Chinese competitor

Tesla builds the world’s most popular electric car Model Y, and has long also been the leading manufacturer of electric cars globally.

In 2024, however, it was overtaken as the world’s largest electric car manufacturer by the Chinese competitor BYD, reports Insideevs.

Made more electric cars than Tesla

In 2024, BYD, which is short for Build Your Dreams, produced a total of 1,777,965 electric cars. This can be compared with the 1,773,443 electric cars that Tesla produced during the year.

However, Insideevs is careful to point out that these numbers are the manufacturer’s own.

The same figures for 2023 were that BYD built around 1.6 million electric cars, compared to 1.85 million electric cars for Tesla.

Tesla still sells the best

However, it is important to point out that BYD certainly produced the most electric cars in 2024, but that this does not necessarily mean that it is the car manufacturer that sold the most electric cars.

According to a compilation from Insideevs, Tesla delivered 1.79 million electric cars in 2024, compared to 1.76 million for BYD.

This means that Tesla still sells the most electric cars globally, even if the difference in deliveries between the two manufacturers has narrowed considerably.

How the competition between the two electric car giants will look in the future remains to be seen.

During the day, the new generation of Tesla’s best-selling Model Y was shown, which could strengthen the brand’s sales in 2025.
