Asylum immigration to Sweden is the lowest in 40 years, according to new statistics from the Swedish Migration Agency.

Last year, 6,250 asylum-related residence permits were granted in Sweden, according to the new statistics presented by Migration Minister Johan Forssell (M) at a press conference.

That group includes people who have been granted a residence permit for asylum reasons, quota refugees or members of those groups. This is the lowest number since 1985.

In total, just under 83,000 residence permits were granted in Sweden in 2024.

The number of people who applied for asylum last year decreased by 25 percent compared to 2023 and amounted to 9,645 people. This is the lowest figure since 1996.
