The underwater images show how spiny sharks have been dumped and died in the harbor of Lysekil. It is in the exact same place where nearly 100 sharks and rays were found in 2022. At Havets hus, those responsible are surprised by Kalla fakta’s new revelation.
– These are sensitive species, says aquarium manager Helen Sköld to TV4Nyheterna.
Havets Hus in Lysekil works to spread knowledge and preserve marine species. Aquarium manager Helen Sköld has seen the images in Kalla fakta’s program Local scandals and reacts to what she sees.
– That animals die in this way is a huge waste of resources and animal cruelty, she says.
May involve crimes
The discovery was made when Kalla fakta conducted a new dive in the harbor, where upwards of 100 spiny sharks and rays were found in 2022.
It is not possible to establish exactly when the new dumping took place or who is behind it. Assessors that Kalla fakta spoke to believe that it could be a crime.
According to the rules, larger spiny sharks caught must be released back into the sea and smaller specimens must be landed and reported before being sold.
The porcupine shark was previously completely protected in Swedish waters. Although today it has increased in number, it is still red-listed and considered to be acutely threatened.
– These are sensitive species. Then you have to have careful fishing, says Helen Sköld at Havets hus and adds:
– If it’s intentional and you haven’t learned from what happened before. Then it is remarkable.
