One of the most controversial cast members of Squid Game Season 2 on Netflix is undoubtedly Choi Seung-hyun. We get to know him as purple-haired player 230, who goes beyond the deadly games Rapper named Thanos is who lost a lot of money due to questionable advice from a crypto influencer. Now he is in debt and is trying to prove himself a winner with even more questionable psychological methods.
K-pop fans know Choi better by his stage name TOP from the boy band BigBang, which performs in both Korean and Japanese. In fact, the Squid Game star is also a rapper in real life – and the parallels don’t stop there.
Thanos from Squid Game is also a rapper in real life – and was convicted of drug use
Choi Seung-hyun aka K-pop star TOP was involved in a scandal a few years ago: He was killed in 2017 convicted of proven use of marijuana. What is not a major offense in this country was punished in South Korea with two years in prison on probation (according to SportsChosun). What followed was a dramatic apology and even a dangerous overdose of a prescribed sedative.

Squid Game Season 2 marked TOP’s big comeback – of all things in a role as a rapper who regularly takes a new designer drug to get through the games. This real-life cast was not well received by all Netflix subscribers in South Korea, which surprised series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk before the season premiered (via Yahoo):
Although personally I can’t be sure if these [Casting-]Decision is correct, this incident occurred a long time ago and was punished by law. It’s not uncommon for artists to make a comeback after marijuana incidents. There have been many similar cases in the past. The Squid Game creator defends his scandalous star
Series creator Hwang even defended TOP’s comeback to People and praised the musician and actor for his courage:
I think it’s him in a way took a lot of courageto portray this character, especially someone who has a lot of similarities that are also quite negative to him as a person. So I think it took a lot of courage for him to take on this role.
Scandals are nothing new when it comes to the Squid Game cast, and they go a few notches worse than puffing on a joint. As the Guardian reported last year, actor O Yeong-su (aka Player 001 in Season 1), now 80, was convicted by a South Korean court of two counts of sexual harassment.
Whether Choi Seung-hyun aka TOP’s career has been rehabilitated after the success with Squid Game remains to be seen – especially in his home country. In any case, he was able to win many new fans internationally.
