Baywatch was one of the biggest shows of the ’90s and ran much longer than some people realize. In 1999 the series was moved from Malibu to Honolulu and ran under the title until 2001 Baywatch: Hawaii further. The main cast at that time also included a young man who we see today with a lot more beard and muscles. He really got off to a flying start a decade later with the fantasy hit Game of Thrones.
Do you recognize him? A little tip before the resolution: You might also know the actor you are looking for from the sci-fi series See – Empire of the Blind or as a DC superhero who is still capable of water.
Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa made his series debut in Baywatch in 1999
Hard to believe, but true: Jason Momoawho we know as Khal Drogo from Game of Thrones or Aquaman, starred in Baywatch: Hawaii at the turn of the millennium. Like his series character, Momoa also comes from the US island nation. As lifeguard Jason Ioane, he ensured safety on the beach in Honolulu and took special care when someone under his watch was injured.
Today, Jason Momoa is a little embarrassed about his Baywatch involvement. As he leaked in an interview a few years ago, his children weren’t even allowed to watch the series. Instead, the lifeguard role from back then was skillfully swept under the carpet: “We don’t say the B word at home! This is all hidden! Never happened!”
Baywatch: A low-calorie ’90s phenomenon
The Baywatch original series with David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson and Co. was one of the biggest series phenomena of the 90s. Despite scathing reviews, the much-derided format about scantily clad lifeguards on the sunny beach became popular most watched television show around the world. However, in eleven seasons, the series was not even nominated for an Emmy Award.
A crime series called Baywatch Nights was already shown as a spin-off in 1995, which later mutated into a cheap X-Files clone in which Hasselhoff’s Mitch has to deal with aliens and monsters. Two decades later, a film reboot followed in 2017 with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Zac Efron in the lead roles.
