Adaptation of the American novel So what is your torment by Sigrid Nunez, The Room Next Door won the Golden Lion in 2024, the supreme award of the Venice Film Festival. But should you see the feature film? The press is generally won over. Le Monde thus considers that it is a film “not to be missed”, “a remarkable work, among the most astonishing of [la] filmography” of the 75-year-old director. The same goes for Les Inrockuptibles, for whom The Room Next Door is “a Pedro Almodóvar masterful”. Sud Ouest salutes a “strong, modest, committed” feature film on the right to die with dignity. Same story from Le Télégramme, which awarded it a score of 4/5. Premiere, for its part , praises the merits of “a duo of irresistible actresses”. Better yet: it is a “return to grace” for Trois Couleurs, the Spanish director returning with “a minimalist drama cut for two queens”.
However, the press is rarely unanimous, and we can read dissonant bells and whistles on L’Almodóvar of 2025. Like Le Figaro, which deplores a film that is “cold and impersonal”, “with a sententious tone bordering on the ridiculous”. The sentence falls: the media gives the film a rating of 1/4. The sauce therefore does not necessarily work for everyone, despite the many laudatory reviews. It is now up to spectators to form their opinion in theaters.
