Successful coach of the French men’s national football team Didier Deschamps will leave his position as head coach in the team after the 2026 World Cup competitions. Deschamps confirmed the matter in an interview with the French TV channel TF1.

Deschamps coached France to World Cup gold in 2018 and World Cup silver in 2022. The Frenchman’s coaching career has been very long, as he started as France’s head coach already in 2012.

– My work will end then (2026), because it has to end at some point. That’s clear in my mind. “I have done my job with the same desire and passion to keep the French team at the highest level, but 2026 is the right time to move on,” Deschamps told TF1.

In his playing career, Deschamps skippered France to the World Cup in 1998 and the European Championship in 2000. In addition to Deschamps, only Mario Zagallo and Franz Beckenbauer have won the men’s World Cup gold both as a player and as a head coach.
