Not everyone is looking forward to 2025 with confidence. But at least we don’t have to defend ourselves against mega-monsters from outer space with gigantic robots: that’s what happens to the protagonists from the visually stunning world Sci-fi highlight Pacific Rim by Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth). His prophecy may not have come true yet, but that doesn’t make his film any less compelling.

In Pacific Rim, gigantic alien monsters, so-called Kaiju, have invaded the earth via portal. To deal with them, humanity uses giant fighting machines called Jaegers. One of the pilots, Raleigh (Charlie Hunnam), loses his brother in an attack and turns his back on war.

In 2025, the Jaeger program will be phased out in favor of a cheaper defensive wall that quickly proves to be inefficient. As a last resort, the military is reactivating old Jaeger machines. Raleigh returns from retirement to save humanity.
In his impressive sci-fi vision, Guillermo del Toro used several elements of Japanese entertainment genres such as the Kaiju (Japanese: monsters) or the giant mecha robots. The result excited many fans and kicks an entire universe including the sequel Pacific Rim 2: Uprising and the Netflix series Pacific Rim: The Black.
Whether Del Toro’s film appears realistic or even desirable as a prediction for 2025 remains to be seen. But even without prophetic precision, Pacific Rim remains an exciting, touching and visually bombastic sci-fi highlight for many.
