Over 35,000 Gay Soldiers Fired – Get Redress by Pentagon

Openly gay and bisexuals were for many years prohibited from serving in the US military. If a soldier’s homosexual or bisexual orientation became known in any way, they could be dismissed.

Now the US Department of Defense, the Pentagon, has decided to give compensation to the tens of thousands of former military personnel who were fired for that reason, reports CBS News.

Those who were discharged often lost all the benefits that come with being a military veteran – such as student aid, home loans and health care benefits. With the Pentagon’s decision, those who were fired can regain their benefits.

    – I felt that my country said that my service was not valuable. Today, I am once again proud to have served my country by standing up for veterans like myself, and ensuring that our honor is recognized,” said veteran Sherill FarrellSee more

The far right can form a government in Austria

The Freedom Party (FPÖ) must try to form a new government in Austria.

It is the first time since the Second World War that a party from the outer right flank has been given this assignment.

FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl has been given the formal probe assignment by President Alexander Van der Bellen, who says it has not been an easy decision to make.

    – I will continue to ensure that the principles and rules of our constitution are respected and complied with correctly, he says.

According to the president, Kickl is sure that he will find sustainable solutions in the coalition talks, and wants to take this responsibility.

When Austria went to the polls in September, the FPÖ became the largest party with just under 29 percent of the vote, but the party then got the nod from the other parties. Conservative ÖVP, social democratic SPÖ and liberal Neos have been negotiating ways to govern across bloc borders, but these negotiations broke down a few days ago.

FPÖ stands for Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs (Freedom Party of Austria) and was founded in 1955 by former Nazis.

Biden bans oil drilling – defeat for Trump

US President Joe Biden has banned new oil and gas extraction along most of the US coast, reports NBC News.

The decision halts extraction over 625 million hectares of ocean along the Atlantic coast, the Pacific coast, the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska’s Bering Sea. According to Biden, oil drilling in these areas would cause irreversible damage and is unnecessary to meet the country’s energy needs.

The ban is seen as a victory for US environmental groups and could hamper President-elect Donald Trump’s plans to increase oil and gas production.
