We’ve been looking forward to this moment for months, now it’s finally here: Love Is Blind has started. The first German spin-off of the controversial Netflix format is receiving heavy criticism online: the show simply has no chance against the US original. Why are the fans so disappointed?
Netflix, we have a problem: Love is Blind: Germany seems totally rushed
The concept of Love is Blind is quite something: 30 singles get to know each other in so-called pods only through conversations, without being allowed to see each other. Within 10 days, the participants have to find out whether they develop an emotional connection with one of the other singles and whether he/she could be the person for life. Shortly before the first meeting, the candidates ask the question of all questions: “Will you marry me?”
The engaged couple are only allowed to see each other for the first time after the marriage proposalthen we go straight on to our dream vacation to get to know each other better. The appeal of the format is watching the singles build a bond with their counterpart within a few days without ever having seen each other.
However Fans of the original experienced a huge disappointment with the German spin-off: the getting-to-know-you phase seemed shorter and less emotional. While in the US episodes the engagement usually only happened in later episodes, Daniel proposed to Hanni in episode 1. A no-go for the fans who were looking forward to the first tender feelings, intimate conversations and profound insights. We as the audience have no idea why the participants fell in love with their chosen one.
“Funny cut”: Reality fans are disappointed with the German offshoot of the Netflix hit
The German version has fewer episodes, but unfortunately this causes more hectic feelings than romantic feelings among those watching, as an Instagram user revealed: “We were so looking forward to the German version. But everything happened far too quickly and there were no real dates or many conversations.” Another user thinks that there was hardly any emotion due to the rush:
I’ve now watched the first episodes and find a lot of things not so authentic. […]
Somehow the German season lacks the lightness and charm of the original series.
Many even had the feeling that the getting-to-know-you phase was shorter than in the US original: “It was just a weird cut for my personal taste and made it look so rushed.”
Hanni and Daniel’s engagement in particular caused criticism online because it was shown far too early: “How many dates did the first engagement take place? 5? Huh? Totally exaggerated to have an engagement in episode 1.”
One user explained that this impression was only due to the unfortunate cut: “The candidates all get the same opportunities and time to get to know each other.” The engagements also take place at the same time. So it remains to be hoped that Netflix will take more time in the next episodes to let the audience participate more in the cast’s emotional chaos.
