She is in her residence in Denmark and is packing up the last things before moving home to Sweden. Irma Schjött, who most recently belonged to Danish Ikast, is now putting handball behind her.
– There are extremely many thoughts, you have devoted and dedicated your whole life to this. And then it ends in an unfair way, because you get shot in the head, as it were, she tells SVT Sport.
– What to do now with life? Where should I go? It’s something to think about.
Processed the feelings: “Extremely sad”
It is the series of ten concussions, of which three in the next two years and the most recent one in October, that force her to stop.
– I have already had time to be extremely sad. In October, when this happened, I felt it would not go any further. There were a few weeks where you lay in bed and cried. A certain part is processed, but there will be more emotions.
Today she feels relatively well, but there are days that are tougher than others.
– I can’t train as much as I want, have a headache and get extremely brain-tired. If I try to go for a walk or do light rehab, I get lethargic and have trouble concentrating. After big gatherings I get very tired and have to sleep.
Tells about the feeling of panic
Schjött’s concussions have thus been caused by her being hit in the head by the ball during training and matches.
– The last few times there has been a feeling of panic in me, because I have thought: “No, no, no, not again”. The girls shoot extremely hard and it’s like a whiplash. The nose swells up and you get blue eyes.
The event in October can even be replayed in your head on a daily basis.
– It’s something I have to process away.
The 26-year-old, who previously represented VästeråsIRsta, H65 Höör and German Thüringer, has made 13 appearances for the Swedish national team, where she was, among other things, part of the 2023 WC squad.
– It was about a week ago that I told my teammates about the decision. It felt surreal watching the game on TV.
What awaits next for Irma Schjött has not yet been decided.
