German Interior Minister: The man who drove into the crowd shows signs of mental illness | News in brief

According to Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, the motive for the act is not yet clear.

German Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser says that there have been signs that the man who drove into the crowd at the Christmas market was mentally ill.

A 50-year-old Saudi psychiatrist Talib al-Abdulmuhsen drove to the Christmas market on December 20 in Magdeburg. The attack killed five and injured more than 200 people.

Faeser said at the press conference that the motive for the act is not yet clear. He added that “striking signs of mental illness have appeared”.

According to Faeser, based on the case, one should consider how to identify possible “factors who are psychologically disturbed and [–] prone to confusing conspiracy theories’.

– Such attackers do not fit into any threat profile”.

According to Faeser, “tens of thousands of tweets” that Abdulbuhsen had published over the years are still uninvestigated.

– That’s why everything is not on the table yet. Who knew about any tip and what happened at any time needs to be closely investigated.
