A man in his 40s sent over 4,000 messages to his ex-girlfriend. Now he is being sentenced for unlawful persecution, writes Värnamo Nyheter.

The man and the woman had previously been colleagues and more than ten years ago began a love affair that ended in 2016. The woman changed jobs in 2020, but in the summer of 2023 the man started sending her messages via Messenger.

The woman blocked him in the app and in May 2024 he was awarded a contact ban against the woman as he continued to text instead.

The man is now being sentenced for unlawful persecution, also known as stalking. A total of 4,661 messages have been collected for evidence. The district court assesses that the punishment corresponds to a prison sentence of two months, but since he has not been convicted before, he receives a daily fine of SEK 16,500 and a fee of SEK 1,000 to the Crime Victims’ Fund.

The man also has his phone confiscated because it was an aid to the crime.
