Since December 23, 2023, the law requires that many electric scooters in Sweden must be insured.
In addition, the driver must always have the insurance certificate with him when he drives his electric scooter.
Although a year has now passed, few people know about the requirement, report Swedish Radio.

Punishable with a fine
Owning your own electric scooter is becoming increasingly common in Sweden.
Despite this, Länsförsäkringar, which is the largest player in the market, states that it has only sold around 700 traffic insurance policies for electric scooters in the past year.
– Firstly, the law came into being very quickly and very few knew which rules apply. This applies to both consumers and retailers, says Helena Hellstenon Länsförsäkringar Östgöta to Sveriges Radio.
If you do not meet the requirements for insurance, you risk a fine, but so far few electric scooters have been checked by the police.
What is traffic insurance?
According to the organization Consumers’ offers a traffic insurance compensation in the event of personal injury to the vehicle’s driver and any passengers.
Damage to persons and property outside the vehicle that the driver has caused with the vehicle is also covered by the insurance.
Both hospital bills and actions for damage to other people’s property can reach high amounts, and thus colliding with an uninsured vehicle can be a costly mistake.
For most types of motor vehicles, motor insurance is a mandatory requirement.

Then traffic insurance is required on your electric scooter
According to Trafikförsäkringsföreningen is it likely that the owner of an electric scooter must have road insurance for it.
Whether this is the case is determined by the weight and speed of the electric scooter. A vehicle with the following characteristics must be insured:
An electric vehicle without a pedal or crank device, if the vehicle is designed to go faster than 20 kilometers per hour.
An electric vehicle without a pedal or crank device, if the vehicle is designed to go faster than 14 kilometers per hour and weighs more than 25 kilograms.
This applies not only to electric scooters but also to electric scooters and self-balancing vehicles.
