In the dark future of Warhammer 40,000 there is only war. But who would actually win when it comes to a showdown? MeinMMO editor and Warhammer expert Benedict Grothaus dares to make a prediction.
At least 9 factions in Warhammer 40,000 are more or less actively fighting for dominance or at least survival in the galaxy. War is constantly going on in different corners of the world, but if everyone were to meet at once, there can only be one winner.
The ranking is not about who could seize power at the apex of their strength, but who would win right now at this moment if all factions competed against each other.
Accordingly, some peoples here are a little weaker than they could potentially be. For each faction you will find an explanation for their position here in the ranking.
Where does the ranking come from?
To the author
I have spent hundreds of hours in various games and lore of the Warhammer universe, most recently Warhammer 40,000. I sunk hundreds of hours into Rogue Trader alone. I have the rule books from the tabletop and at least a small Sororitas army standing here, albeit unpainted. The ranking is based on my personal assessment of the strength of the factions.

9th place: Dark Eldar or Drukhari
In direct combat, the Dark Eldar are dangerous opponents, but they are particularly feared because of their robberies. However, they have one major weakness for a direct confrontation: the network of paths.
Through the Network of a Thousand Gates, the Dark Eldar can move around very freely, but they can also only live there. Otherwise, sooner or later they would be devoured by the Chaos God Slaanesh. In addition, they need torment to survive, so they could not wipe out their enemies but would have to enslave them.
Given their extremely small number, this would be a…sporting undertaking.
You can discover some exciting details about the history of the Drukhari and Aeldari yourself in the role-playing game Rogue Trader:
8th place: Eldar or Aeldari
After their fall, the Eldar are a dying people who are only delaying their death. Although they once dominated the entire galaxy, they now have little significance in the larger picture.
The Eldar are few in number and largely stay out of fights. Although they are considered strong fighters and their world ships are almost impregnable, they could do little against a combat force dozens of times greater.
Unlike the Dark Eldar, they are at least a little more free to move, which gives them an advantage. They are currently trying to resurrect one of their gods – which may give them better chances in the future.
7th place: Star Empire of the T’au
The T’au are an extremely young people, having only been discovered about 6,000 years ago. During this time, the T’au have expanded and expanded their star empire. They focus primarily on peaceful expansion, but resort to weapons if necessary.
Technologically, the T’au are one of the strongest, if not the strongest people, with weapons that few can match. But they simply don’t have the numbers to win on a grand scale.
The T’au people are quite small and rely on support from other peoples. To do this, they are still researching travel faster than light and need to expand. In the more distant future they would be a greater threat.
