With the first casting rumors for Dumbledore, Snape, Hagrid and McGonagall, it should be clear to every Hogwarts fan by now: The Harry Potter series is entering a decisive phase. Casting decisions are currently being made behind the scenes and many are wondering how different the series will be from the films. An exciting change already seems to be emerging: several Harry Potter characters in the series are likely to appear significantly younger.
Harry Potter series probably rejuvenates Snape, Sirius, Lupine and Harry’s parents
Today someone other than Alan Rickman as Professor Snape to imagine in the fantasy films is almost impossible. The British star first appeared in the iconic role in 2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and was author JK Rowling’s dream choice. Rickman was actually in his mid-50s at the time 20 years older than in the original book described. Accordingly, other roles have also been adjusted slightly upwards in terms of age. Because as we later find out, Harry’s least favorite teacher went to school with his parents Lilly and James as well as the remaining Marauders Sirius Black, Remus Lupine and Peter Pettigrew.
Everything we already know about the Harry Potter series suggests that showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod will stick closely to the detailed book original in the remake of the wizarding story. For example, they have already revealed that the poltergeist Peeves, who was left out of the films, will be in the series. This suggests that Harry’s parents’ generation too this time is cast more faithfully to the book: namely early/mid 30s. Even if current rumored Snape favorite Paapa Essiedu doesn’t end up landing the role, the actor’s age provides a crucial clue: he’s 34.
How old were Snape and Co. really in the Harry Potter books?
The tombstones of Lily and James Potter, which Harry and Hermione visit in Godric’s Hollow in the seventh book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows *, give the wizarding world a clear timeline in the novels: the first part begins in 1991, the last book ends in 1998. Furthermore, Rowling was always generous with revealing birth and death dates, so we true ages of the Harry Potter staff in many cases know exactly. Here are a few examples of people who are likely to be rejuvenated by the series:
Of course, this calculation excludes witches and wizards, for whom special rules apply: Albus Dumbledore, for example, is already 110 years old when Harry starts school (which would be an obstacle to a realistic cast). And gamekeeper Hagrid is already 63 years old in Harry’s first year at Hogwarts, but he appears younger because of his giant blood.
All Harry Potter films are currently streaming on Netflix, Amazon Prime *, RTL+ and Sky/WOW, so you don’t have to spend your Christmas time without Hogwarts.
