Newly elected President Donald Trump is taking action for the largest territorial gain in US history. Trump, who was elected the 47th President of the USA, stated that Greenland should be under US control; He said that this was an absolute necessity.
“IT WILL BE THE USA’S BIGGEST TERRITORIAL GAIN”
Although Greenland Prime Minister Egede declared that its lands were not for sale, the US media began to prepare the ground with the headlines ‘the biggest land gain’.
According to the news in the New York Post, Trump’s plan to purchase Greenland will be the largest US territorial gain in history, surpassing even the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, which almost doubled the size of America.
“THE PRESIDENT IS ONE HUNDRED PERCENT SERIOUS”
Trump’s selection of PayPal co-founder Ken Howery as the US ambassador of Denmark, which has controlled the huge region for more than 300 years, is also seen as part of this plan.
Trump’s advisers and allies say he is serious about annexing Greenland and taking back the Panama Canal. A source close to Trump told the newspaper, “The President is 100 percent serious.”
DEPENDED ON DENMARK FOR MORE THAN 300 YEARS
Greenland, the world’s largest island, has a central location in the Arctic region, which is becoming increasingly important as ice melts and new trade routes are opened due to the climate crisis. Greenland’s proximity to the United States and its location on key sea routes, which also has rich underground reserves, are seen as a “strategic advantage” for Washington, especially in the context of increasing competition with Russia and China, but the critical region has been connected to Denmark for more than 300 years.
DENMARK TAKES ACTION: 1.5 BILLION DOLLAR INVESTMENT
According to the news in Hürriyet; Denmark, which did not give a harsh response after Trump’s statement, made a remarkable move and announced that it would support Greenland’s defense with $1.5 billion in new resources, including two elite sled dog teams.
Although the decision, which came days after Trump signaled his increased interest in purchasing the island, was considered as a move against Washington, Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, in his statement to the Jyllands-Posten newspaper, claimed that the decision had nothing to do with Trump’s statements and said, “For many years “We have not invested enough in the Arctic throughout the years, we are now planning a stronger presence,” he said.
NEW DEFENSE MEASURES FOR THE ISLAND
The massive defense package will fund the purchase of two new patrol boats, two new long-range unmanned aerial vehicles and allow the deployment of two additional sled dog teams to the island, Poulsen said.
The Danes have used sled teams to patrol Greenland since World War II. According to the BBC, Denmark plans to increase the number of staff at its command center in Greenland, along with more sled dog patrols and upgrade the island’s airports to handle F-35 fighter jets.
