More watched than Wednesday, Netflix’s most viewed series is making its big return for a sequel.
Since Netflix has established itself as the main streaming platform, it is not uncommon for its original programs to become real phenomena to the point of becoming essential sagas. After Stranger Things Or The Bridgertons Chroniclea non-English production has become, since 2021, the most watched series of all time on the streaming platform.
With 265.2 million views (and more than 2 billion hours of viewing), its first season actually did better than the first season of Wednesday (252 million views) or the fourth of Stranger Things (115.6 million views), which are nevertheless the most viewed English-speaking series on the platform. Unsurprisingly, a sequel is coming out this week.
Squid Game was an immediate and unexpected phenomenon on Netflix. The Korean series tells the story of a dystopian game, in which the winner can win the equivalent of 32 million euros if they survive children’s games revisited in versions that have become deadly. Despite the success, the program caused controversy in schools in France in 2021, because children reproduced certain tests in the playground. Remember that the series is prohibited for children under 16.
Despite this French controversy, the success of Squid Game has been stratospheric, and so it’s no surprise that Netflix is ordering a second season. This sees the return of player 456 (Lee Jung-jae), winner of the survival game, who returns to the deadly game with new participants and a new objective to accomplish… By once again risking his own life.
It is a safe bet that Squid Game risks making a stunning return on Netflix audiences. Season 2 is released just during the end-of-year holidays, on December 26, 2024. We will now see if subscribers will be as excited as by the first season, or if the surprise effect has already passed.
