It is not as innocent as it seems: Phones are smart, sleep is poor quality!

It is not as innocent as it seems Phones are

Browsing is done to entertain yourself before sleep. Some even sleep with it under their pillow. So, how does being on the phone and being exposed to a blue screen just before going to sleep affect sleep quality? According to experts, increasing phone addiction keeps young people, especially, from sleeping. In order to regain sleep health, it is recommended to make the sleeping environment dim at least one hour before and to stay away from electronic devices, including smartphones.

Trakya University Faculty of Medicine, Head of Physiology Department, Prof. Dr. Levent Öztürk said that mobile phones suppress the secretion of the melatonin hormone needed before sleep, and therefore it becomes difficult to fall asleep.

Prof. said that smartphones negatively affect sleep in several different ways. Dr. Öztürk gave advice for quality sleep.

“BRIGHT LIGHT MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO FALL ASLEEP”

Prof. said that there is usually bright light in mobile phones. Dr. Öztürk said, “Especially in new models, this light has shifted towards the blue spectrum. Therefore, exposure to that light causes the suppression of the melatonin hormone secreted from the brain. We consider this hormone as a sleep stabilizer. In this regard, melatonin deficiency makes it difficult to fall asleep and makes sleep more difficult during sleep.” “This is an important factor,” he said.

Prof. stated that another factor is to replace sleep time with activities spent on the mobile phone. Dr. Öztürk mentioned that spending time watching videos, playing games or messaging friends delays the time it takes to fall asleep. Pointing out that there is no concept of time in mobile phone activities, Prof. Dr. Öztürk stated that this lack of time frame creates a problem in terms of sleep.

Emphasizing that media content and what one deals with on a mobile phone are also important, Prof. Dr. Öztürk stated that in violent or stimulating images, the body’s warning systems are alarmed and make it difficult to fall asleep.

Stating that the first precaution to be taken is not to bring electronic devices into the bedroom, Prof. Dr. Öztürk stated that it is beneficial not to keep mobile phone, computer and television screens in the sleeping area. Prof. also gave advice to citizens who cannot leave their phones with them due to their profession. Dr. Öztürk stated that placing the mobile phone one or two meters away from the bed will preserve sleep quality.
