This is how the Christmas tree should be thrown away – otherwise there may be a fine
The Christmas tree must be disposed of in a certain way, otherwise you risk a fine. The organization “Keep Sweden clean” issues a reminder about how to dispose of this year’s Christmas tree.
Throwing the Christmas tree in nature, outside the gate or in the nearest forest can lead to a fine. The tree takes a long time to break down in nature and often has remnants from old Christmas decorations.

“Christmas trees must be left at the municipality’s collection point for garden waste or special Christmas tree collections. In many municipalities, they can also be sorted as general waste,” the organization writes.
How the tree should be sorted can vary from municipality to municipality.

This is how you recycle the plastic tree
Plastic Christmas trees cannot be recycled in the same way as authentic Christmas trees. To get rid of a plastic tree, you need to go to a recycling center.
Depending on whether the plastic tree has a metal frame or not, it must either be sorted into metal or into plastic if the majority of the Christmas tree consists of plastic, writes “Keep Sweden clean”.

– The general waste statistics for the flow of municipal waste show that 61,000 tonnes of textile waste was generated in 2022. But the flow is probably underestimated, the Environmental Protection Agency’s manager has Yvonne Augustsson said in an earlier interview with News24.
– This is because there were no specific requirements in the past to collect, handle or report textile waste specifically, which means that we have a poor grasp of how large amounts are generated.
