Sega announced that it will not continue its nostalgia-filled Mini console series. The company prefers to focus on the future.
Segamade a statement that would upset its fans and announced that it would not produce Mini consoles for Saturn and Dreamcast. Although the company attracted great attention in the nostalgia market with the Genesis Mini and Genesis Mini 2, it stated that it would not continue with retro products. Sega America and Europe CEO Shuji Utsumi said, “We are not a retro company. We value our heritage, but we also want to offer new things. “Otherwise, we will become history and this is not our goal,” he said, revealing the vision of the company.
Sega Focuses on the Future
Even though Sega has given up on retro consoles, it aims to modernize old game series and offer them to players. New games are being worked on for popular series such as Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and Virtua Fighter. In addition, Sonic plans to add to its successes in the Persona and Yakuza series. While Creative Assembly is working on new Total War games and Alien Isolation 2, Sports Interactive continues to develop the Football Manager series.
Shuji Utsumi said in an interview with the BBC that Sega is considering the idea of launching a video game subscription service. This service, which can rival services such as EA Play, Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus, can enable Sega to reach a wider audience in the gaming world. Utsumi gave hints about this project by saying, “We are thinking and discussing something that we cannot share right now.”
Sega’s new strategy, moving away from nostalgia products and targeting modern players, seems to shape the company’s future vision. However, fans are still holding out hope for a Mini console for Saturn and Dreamcast.
