For many people, Christmas is a time for fairytale films. But if you want to see a little more action and special effects than in Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella, you can (again?) from today perhaps the best fantasy series of all time start. We’re talking, of course, about Peter Jackson’s Ring trilogues, starting with The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
The two sequels will then flicker across screens in the coming days.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring starts today, the best fantasy series of all time on TV
For a long time, JRR Tolkien’s fantasy adventure about the War of the Ring was considered almost impossible to film. In 2001 (also in December) the first film in the Lord of the Rings series was released in cinemas and proved the opposite. The story begins with the 111th birthday of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm), who sets off on one last adventure and leaves a magical ring to his nephew Frodo (Elijah Wood). The wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) discovers that it is the one ring which contains the essence of the dark ruler Sauron, who was defeated thousands of years ago.
To prevent the powerful ring from falling into the hands of Sauron’s minions, Frodo sets off on a long and dangerous journey with his gardener Sam (Sean Astin) and his friends Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd). In the course of the long journey, Gandalf joins forces across the board Middle-earth the ranger Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), the fierce Boromir (Sean Bean), the elf Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and the dwarf Gimli (John Rhys-Davies). Your destination is the fiery Mount Doom, the only place where the alluring ring can be destroyed.
The breathtaking landscapes of New Zealand provided the perfect backdrop for Middle-earth, populated by adorable fantasy creatures, scary monsters and unforgettable characters. However, until the emotional finale in the third film, many battles have to be fought and countless tests have to be overcome – not least that of resisting the temptation of the one ring.
