Will Davidson, who has been acting chief of the town’s fire service since August, becomes permanent chief and director of emergency services Jan. 1, the municipality announced recently.

“Will has been with us for quite a few years,” said Mayor Gary Atkinson. “We’re pretty pleased to have him.”

Davidson has been a firefighter for 27 years, including 22 years in Plympton-Wyoming where he started out and where he has held several positions, including chief of training, before being named acting chief when Erik Campbell left the post.

Davidson also spent five years as fire chief in North Middlesex before returning to the department in his hometown after taking a job in 2019 as a professor at Lambton College’s fire school.

“He has a wide range of experience in the field, extensive service in fire prevention and proven leadership skills at the management level,” Atkinson said in a statement.

“My dad (Bill Davidson) was chief here for a long-long time and my grandfather was on the department for 50 years,” Davidson said. “It’s a long history here.”

His mother, Patricia Davidson, served previously as mayor, as well as MP for Sarnia-Lambton.

“My family has deep roots here and it is certainly nice to be doing what I love in my own community,” Will Davidson said in a statement.

The department has about 60 part-time firefighters divided between fire halls at Wyoming and Camlachie.

“I’m looking forward to working with our firefighters,” Davidson said. “We really do have a good group of firefighters. It makes my job a lot nicer” and “a lot easier.”

Plympton-Wyoming is a municipality of 8,300 residents next to Sarnia in central Lambton County.

“We look forward to Will moving our department forward and giving our residents the fire protection and the leadership we need within our community,” Atkinson said.
