Here the lonely get company this Christmas: “We have no family”

The holiday of generosity – and it’s not about pats under the tree. On Christmas Eve, many open their doors to those who may not have a home or family to celebrate with. Among other things here at Edsberg Castle, which for ten years organized a Christmas for everyone.

– It means a lot because it is a nice community and comfortable environment. The castle is cozy and everything, says guest Göran Hansson.

Why is this important in your Christmas celebration – coming here?

– I’m alone and then it’s fun to see some other people too, says Göran.

Natalia Isaken and her family also usually come to Edsberg Castle to celebrate Christmas.

– It’s such a nice atmosphere and none of us are from Stockholm, so we’re here. We don’t have family here but we have friends who live in Sollentuna so we meet here. And it is like society’s meeting point, she says.

Ten volunteers move in

The kitchen is busy – the potatoes have to be boiled, the eggs have to be decorated and dirty plates have to be replaced with clean ones. Around ten volunteers work today to serve the over 200 guests.

– It’s full speed with plates and dishes and back and forth all the time. But I think it’s so important. It’s my Christmas and then when the evening comes you’re quite satisfied with what you’ve done and think about all the happy people, all the pleasant conversations and how much it has meant, says volunteer Birgitta Sturesson.

Entertainment and food

In addition to free Christmas food, there will also be entertainment by local musicians and artists.

– In Persian we have a short expression: “When you are happy, I look to you and I am happy inside.” When I see people happy then I have to go there. So I contribute to my joy. My own joy too, says Mehdi Allameh.
