Anyone who plans to go on a mountain tour on Christmas Day would do best to refrain. SMHI has issued an orange warning for wind combined with snowfall.
In addition, yellow weather warnings prevail in large areas in northern Sweden for several days to come.
Already on Christmas Day morning, an area with strong winds and heavy snow flurries moves in over the northernmost Lapland mountains.
The combination is expected to cause difficult weather and SMHI advises against going out on the mountain unnecessarily as rescue efforts can be risky and take a long time.
The reduced visibility makes it very difficult to orientate yourself and it can be difficult to move around as well as to travel and anchor tents. In addition, the risk of frostbite is high.
The orange warning is valid until 19:00 on Christmas Day.
Even in the northern mountains, SMHI warns in yellow of similar weather on Christmas Day, and only experienced mountain hikers should then go on a trip.
Slip in the south
Further south in the country, instead, it is the slip that can cause it. In a large area from Sundsvall in the south to Övertorneå in the north, SMHI warns of sudden ice slippage. Road users are advised to drive carefully and adjust their speed to the road conditions. The yellow warning for the area is valid until 10 a.m. on Christmas Day morning.
On Boxing Day morning until noon the following day, there is a yellow warning for very strong wind and snowfall in the Lapland mountains.
The same warning is also issued for the northern Jämtlandsfjällen from 03.00 to 07.00 on Boxing Day.
