The best Netflix series of 2024: places 20 to 11
No matter whether it’s fantasy adventure, visually stunning science fiction or heartwarming romance, German crime comedy or exciting documentaries: the top 20 of the best-rated Netflix series of the year are characterized by a variety of genres that have something for every series taste.
For the ranking, we looked at the reviews from the Moviepilot community (as of December 19th) for all new Netflix series in 2024. All new products from… were included in the selection at least 50 movie pilots to be evaluated.
The best Netflix series of 2024 – 10th place: Boy Swallows Universe
Boy Swallows Universe may not have been a big hit on the Netflix charts, but the series adaptation of Trent Dalton’s semi-autobiographical novel still found numerous enthusiastic fans. Because the story of the boy Eli Bell, who has to navigate a reality marked by crime, poverty and drug violence in Brisbane, Australia in the 80s, touched the heart.
The best Netflix series of 2024 – 9th place: Mindful Morden Anyone who set up a time island and watched the series adaptation of Karsten Dusse’s bestseller Mindful Morden was rewarded with a bitterly evil and funny crime comedy that Tom Schilling’s lawyer Björn Diemel constantly praised Escalating incidents transform him from a stressed-out workaholic into a murderous gangster mastermind. The best Netflix series 2024 – 8th place: baby reindeer
The British miniseries Baby Reindeer is probably Netflix’s biggest surprise hit this year. Amateur comedian and bartender Donny Dunn treats a dejected woman named Martha to tea – with disastrous consequences. A rousing mix of bitter humor, psychological horror about a toxic stalker-victim relationship and some devastating revelations unfolds over seven episodes. Reindeer Baby is tough, especially because series creator and leading actor Richard Gadd deals with his own trauma autobiographically.
The best Netflix series of 2024 – 7th place: The Brothers Sun
The fact that the crime action comedy The Brothers Sun made it into the top 10 best Netflix series of 2024 is a bittersweet success. Because good reviews and even the presence of Oscar winner and action icon Michelle Yeoh were not enough to secure an extension for the story of the Taiwanese gangster family Sun. Just eight weeks after launching, Netflix pulled the plug, leaving fans forever left with an open ending.
The best Netflix series of 2024 – 6th place: Nobody Wants This
The Netflix series Nobody Wants This proved to us that they actually still exist: really good RomComs. Because the impossible love story between the agnostic and sex podcaster Joanne and Rabbi Noah impresses as a heartwarming, feel-good series with plenty of humor and romance. And by the way, she also gave humanity a gift: 17 years after the end of OC California, a new generation of series fans were now allowed to fall in love with Adam Brody.
The best Netflix series of 2024 – 5th place: Two in one day
13 years after Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess broke the hearts of millions of film fans, David Nicholls’ novel was made into a film again this year – albeit as a 14-part series Two in One Day. Over a period of almost two decades, each episode looks at the development of the relationship between Dex and Emma, whose lives take unexpected directions. But be careful, before you watch the series, you should stock up on tissues.
The best Netflix series of 2024 – 4th place: Not one more
You were the only Spanish Netflix production to choose the drama series Not One More in fourth place. It tells the story of 17-year-old student Alma, who one day turns the lives of her friends and the entire school upside down when she hangs up a banner that says “Be careful. There’s a rapist hiding here.”
The best Netflix series of 2024 – 3rd place: Mr. McMahon
The top 3 opens with this year’s best-rated documentary series from Netflix, which illuminates a piece of wrestling history over six episodes. More specifically: the controversial reign of entrepreneur, wrestler and TV commentator Vince McMahon, who ran the world wrestling entertainment promotion WWE from the 1980s until 2022.
The best Netflix series of 2024 – 2nd place: The Gentlemen
Crazy, British and typically Guy Ritchie: The gangster series The Gentlemen, as a loose spin-off of the Ritchie hit of the same name, follows army officer Eddie (Theo James), who not only inherits his father’s aristocratic title, land and fortune after his death, but also also its connections to organized crime. Only one Netflix series could top that in 2024.
The best Netflix series of 2024 – 1st place: Ripley
You voted the third film adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Talented Mr. Ripley as number 1 of the best Netflix series of the year. But even if you already know the story of the unpredictable and scheming fraudster Tom Ripley, the serial adaptation can inspire with new facets. In addition to the exciting cast around Andrew Scott, the Netflix series is particularly impressive with its beguilingly staged black and white images.
