Although Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom rarely tops lists of the best Indiana Jones films, it is one of the most fascinating films Steven Spielberg has ever made. That alone 20 minute opening sequencewhich erupts into an opulent musical number, is an incredible masterpiece.
The film is on TV tonight.
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is Spielberg’s least favorite Indy film
Although many film fans simply say “Indiana Jones 2” when it comes to the Temple of Doom, it is not a sequel to the first part. In fact, the story takes place before the events of Raiders of the Lost Ark and thus acts as a prequel to the 1981 adventure classic.
As part of the plot, Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) ends up in India, where – after a phenomenal crash landing in a rubber dinghy – he is drawn under the spell of five sacred Shankara stones. He is accompanied on his journey by the singer Willie (Kate Capshaw) and the boy Short Round (Ke Huy Quan).

From the explosive opening sequence to the nerve-racking roller coaster ride in the film’s spectacular finale: Spielberg shows his best side in terms of directing and directs this action-packed adventure film in an equally unleashed, light-footed and pointed manner – an extremely exciting mixture.
Nevertheless, the director has made critical comments about the Temple of Death several times in the past. As The Playlist notes, it was already five years after its theatrical release dissatisfied with his work. In 1989, he told the Sun-Sentinel that he regretted some of the creative decisions he made while filming:
I wasn’t happy with the second film at all. It was too dark, too underground and far too terrible. I think he even dubbed Poltergeist. There is not even a shred of my personal feelings in The Temple of Doom.
You can check on TV tonight whether that is actually the case.
