Christmas week marks the end of bad weather over a large part of the country. In these regions, the sun is making a remarkable return.
After a month spent in gray and rain, calm returns with the holidays. Or almost. In some areas, the drizzle has difficulty going away. For good reason, on Monday, improvements followed one another slowly. In the mountains, snowfall continues with a blizzard accompanied by violent winds and an avalanche risk reassessed upwards which complicates access to ski resorts.
In the north of the Alps, it becomes strong or even maximum due to the Enol depression which plunged this Monday into the Mediterranean, fueled by a high-altitude jet stream at nearly 250km/h. This depression is causing very rough weather in the south and east of the country until Monday. On the other hand, “to the north and west, clearings return before further deterioration in Brittany and the return of rain in the early evening. The northwest wind accentuates the cold feeling”, indicates The Weather Channel.
On New Year’s Eve, this mild spell becomes clearer with the swelling of the Azores anticyclone which brings calm weather despite thick gray weather. The west is not spared from the drizzle, like the Pyrenees, affected by some residual rain in the morning. In the evening, however, your festive meal will not be hampered by any aggravating phenomena or risk of ice on the plains. Locally, only light fog and scattered drizzle could hamper your return journeys.
This Wednesday, the long-awaited Christmas day, improvements continue in the Mediterranean with good weather and a decrease in winds. Furthermore, in the Alps and the Jura, brilliant snow and sunshine will accompany your celebrations. A pleasing observation considering that with climate change, snow episodes are much less frequent, particularly in the plains, recalls Weather France.
It is therefore no surprise that “in the plain regions and valleys from the south-west to the Channel coast, you will remain under a compact gray which will rarely allow clearings to pass through. A little drizzle will still affect the north-west of the country” , underlines La Chaîne Météo.
Thursday and Friday, calm persists across all of our regions with magnificent weather in the mountains and on the banks of the Mediterranean. In the north, however, the sky remains very cloudy, even threatening. The high pressures of the anticyclone centered on France will prevent any change. Frosts will still make a comeback after Christmas night in the plains in the east. According to the Weather Channel, “this nighttime cooling trend should increase and spread to many regions at the end of the week as well as next weekend.”
