The Turkish media also claims that the al-Assads’ lives are severely restricted in Moscow. The Kremlin denies the information.
Russia denies Turkish media reports that Syria’s ousted dictator Bashar al-Assad wife Asma al-Assad would have filed for divorce and would like to move to London.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also rejected claims by the Turkish media that the lives of the al-Assads who fled to Russia are being severely restricted in Moscow and that their assets have been frozen.
According to various sources, Bashar al-Assad and his family fled from Syria to Russia earlier this month several hours before the rebels reached the capital Damascus. Al-Assad apparently did not reveal his departure intentions to anyone, not even his brother.
The family of the former leader of Syria has long ties to Russia, and over the years his relatives have acquired real estate in Russia for tens of millions of dollars.
Mrs. al-Assad’s leukemia was reported in the spring
Asma al-Assad, 49, has both British and Syrian citizenship.
The daughter of a Syrian doctor and diplomat studied IT and French literature at King’s College London and worked at an investment bank in New York.
The Assads got married in 2000, when Asma was 25 years old. Their three children are currently in their twenties.
Back in 2011, Vogue magazine published an extensive personal story about Asma al-Assad, where she was called “the rose of the desert”. In addition, the story described her as the “freshest and most attractive” first lady, but failed to mention that her husband had already killed more than 5,000 civilians by this point. Vogue later removed the story from the web.
In May of last year, al-Assad’s presidential office announced that Mrs. al-Assad had been diagnosed with leukemia, for which she was receiving treatment. It was also announced that the first lady of Syria will temporarily withdraw from her public duties.
