The program will transition from a municipal responsibility to operation by Circular Materials, a national not-for-profit organization “committed to building an efficient and effective recycling system across Ontario,” said a news release from the city.

In 2016, the Government of Ontario introduced the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, initiating a transition to a new province-wide recycling system. This shifts responsibility for the Blue Box program from municipalities to product producers.

Between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2025, there will be no changes to assigned collection days or the list of acceptable Blue Box materials.

The two-sort system (paper products in one bin and containers in the other) will remain in place. Customers can continue to bring the same Blue Box materials to the Mohawk Street Landfill at 20 Morrison Rd.

After Jan. 1, residents can contact Emterra at 1-888-597-1541 or [email protected] for recycling collection inquiries, such as missed collections, recycling questions, or replacement of recycling bins. New or replacement bins can no longer be picked up at the Mohawk Street Landfill as of Jan. 1.

The Blue Box Recycling program in the County of Brant will also be transitioning to operation by Circular Materials, effective Jan. 1.

“This transition to Circular Materials represents a significant step forward for recycling in Ontario,” said Andrea Bazzard, the county’s director of environmental services. “By placing the responsibility on producers, it encourages them to be more mindful of the materials they use in their products. This approach supports innovation, sustainability, and the promotion of recycling in our community.”

Recycling collection in Brant County will continue in 2025 with no changes to current practices for households, this includes collection days. Changes may occur in future years.

Non-residential properties will need to arrange separate recycling services with local resources available at transfer stations.

“We are working closely with Circular Materials to ensure a smooth transition for residents” said Bazzard. “Our goal is to ensure Circular Materials maintains a high quality of service while adapting to this new, producer-led model.”
